The Goblin Shark (Mitsukurina owstoni) traces its lineage back 125 million years, earning the title “living fossil.” Found 270–1,300 meters down, it sports a long, flat snout packed with ampullae of Lorenzini that sense prey’s electric fields.
Its extendable jaws shoot forward to snatch crustaceans, cephalopods, and fish, aided by needle-sharp teeth and powerful suction. Soft, flabby flesh and pink-gray skin help it melt into the gloom, letting this slow swimmer ambush with ease.
Believed to be ovoviviparous, it remains one of the ocean’s great enigmas, showcasing how ancient design can still rule modern depths.
