Rushforth said on Facebook that the scoria's distinctive red color is a result of the iron minerals in the lava oxidizing. It contrasts starkly with the neighboring basalt, which has not been affected by this oxidation. The scene, according to Rushforth, is "otherworldly," especially considering how "remote" it is. One of DJI's best-selling drones, the Mavic Air 2, may have been the one he used.

The photographer of this Siena-winning image, "Coloured Watermix, Huelva, Spain," is Ignacio Medem. This view from Spain, which shows the Rio Tinto, or "Red River," almost looks like it belongs in a fairy tale. The Rio Tinto flows into the Sierra Morena Mountains of Andalucia in southwest Spain.

Five thousand years of mineral mining are responsible for the distinctive hue. Acid mine drainage is the result of the chemicals used in this mining. These chemicals are a disaster for the ecology, even though they are what gave rise to the stunning colors of Rio Tinto. The Parrot Anafi EPV, which includes reality goggles and a backpack for devoted wildlife photographers, might have been Medem's drone of choice.
